Nightshade vegetables contain alkaloids of which solanine is believed to cause inflammation.
That being said nightshades like red bellpeppers and eggplant are choc-full of
flavonoids and nutrients that are very beneficial. In fact many nightshade vegetables
contain nutrients that may actually help to lower inflammation such as lycopene found in
tomatoes and nasunin found in eggplant.
Nightshade vegetables include the well known white potatoes, tomatoes, peppers,
eggplant and also okra, goji berries, and tomatilloes. There are over 2000 varieties of
nightshade vegetables and herbs.
Most humans have no issue with nightshades and in fact do and should include them
as part of a healthy diet. However just as not all food suits everyone, it goes
without saying that those who feel they may be sensitive to certain
nightshade vegetables should avoid them.
A healthy gut generally has no problem with digesting alkaloids present in nightshade vegetables but
if the digestive system is compromised then alkaloids and for that matter many other
substances can trigger an immune response.
