Valerian is a hairy tufted herb that grows in the north western himalaya mountains. The roots of this plant have a sweet smelling essential oil and are used for medicinal purposes. It is anti spasmodic, stimulant, carminative and stomachic. It has been used as a folk remedy for hysteria, hypochondriasis, nervous unrest and emotional stress.
Valerian is used in Europe as an antispasmodic, particularly for abdominal cramps due to nervousness and for uterine cramps and menstrual agitation. It may also be applied locally for cramps and other occasional muscle tensions.
Valerian in Ayurveda:
As per ayurveda, valerian's properties are bitter, sweet, pungent and astringent. Valerian is said to balance the doshas of vata and kapha.
Directions for taking Valerian
1 capsule twice a day after meals.

Valerian side effects and precautions
When used as prescribed, valerian has no side effects and is non habit forming. No more than 500mg of Valerian should be taken per day. People taking barbiturates and benzodiazepines such as Ativan, Valium, and Xanax should not use Valerian root.
Valerian root should be used conservatively and should not be discontinued suddenly. It should not be taken for more than 3 months at a time.
