Liv52 / Livercare herbs properties & action

The herbs in Liv.52 have been selected due to their well known ayurvedic properties that are beneficial for the liver and for overall well being.

Capers (Capparis spinosa) are well known to improve the functional efficiency of the liver and protect and stimulate the liver. Capers have high quantities of rutin and quercetin which are bioflavonoids. Rutin is considered very beneficial as an anti-oxidant and stimulant and helps promote absorption of nutrients while quercetin has anti-bacterial properties. They also help to support the body's inflammation response. Capers also contain nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin k, Niacin, Riboflavin, Calcium, Iron and Copper.

In a 2017 study published in the Advanced Pharmaceutical Bulletin, a 12 week randomized double-blind study was conducted on 44 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. Anthropometric measures, grade of fatty liver, serum lipoproteins and liver enzymes were measured. Weight and BMI were found to be significantly reduced in the group which was given capers. Serum ALT and AST were highly reduced 4

Wild Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is also known as a powerful hepatic stimulant which increases bile secretion and promotes digestion. Wild chicory has even been referenced in ancient Greek writings and was called "Friend of the Liver" by Galenus on account of its stimulating effect on the liver. It has been used in traditional herbal preparations for removal of excess internal mucus as well as for gallstones.

A study published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal showed the ameliorating effects of chicory on rats. Chicory extract helped to reduce hepatoxicity and reduce the levels of bilirubin and biochemical markers aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP). It also helped reduce oxidative stress.5

Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) – protects the liver from toxicity induced by drugs. It is considered a detoxicant. It is a plant that is found and used around the world both as a herb and as a food. In traditional herbal use, the juice has been used in cases of liver and spleen enlargement as well as when the liver gets scarred by alcoholism and liver tissue damage by other causes. It is also used for skin conditions.

In a study on rats published in the Biological Trace Elements Research journal, it was found that this herb helped to protect the liver from the effects of cadmium chloride toxicity. It helped reduce lipid peroxidation ( which is the oxidative degration of lipids causing cell damage). It also had beneficial effects on the anti-oxidant system of the liver.8

Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) – helps to protect against toxins and is a tonic for the heart and liver. It also regulates hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. The bark of Arjuna helps to protect our DNA.

It is considered very benefical as a cardiac protective 9 and also has a protective effect on the liver when it is subjected to medications, alcohol and other factors that affect the liver.

Negro Coffee (Cassia occidentalis) promotes detoxification of the liver and helps in promoting digestion. It promotes regularity of bowel movements and has a cleansing and diuretic effect.

A study on rats showed that extract of Cassia occidentalis leaves had a positive effect on kidney function and urine excretion. It was also found to have anti-oxidant properties 10

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – helps to improve appetite. It has also been traditionally used to stop blood loss. It has been referred to ancient literature when Achilles used it to stop bleeding on his soldiers. In traditional ayurvedic remedies it has also been used for liver conditions, gallbladder conditions, urinary condtions, issues with internal organs and stomach conditions.

Known as "mil-folhas" in Brazil, this herb is widely used in Brazilian folk medicine for heart and kidney conditions. Its traditionally known effects include its diuretic and hypotensive actions. In a study on rats published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was found that an extract of this herb increases urinary output. This was attributed to the activation of bradykinin B2 receptors and the activity of cyclooxygenases. Bradykinin B2 receptors help in reducing DNA damage, apoptosis, morphological and functional kidney changes 11

In traditional Ayurveda it is also considered beneficial for liver and spleen conditions as well as ascites. It is supposed to relieve toxicity and promotes absorption.

Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) - Amalaki or Indian gooseberry is considered very beneficial to remove toxins. It is a rejuvenative that helps in retaining youthfulness and supports the body's immune system. It has diuretic, astringent and tonic properties.

Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) - Chitraka herb in Ayurveda is considered a digestive and carminative herb. It helps to improve digestion, absorption and assimilation of food and relieves intestinal cramping. It is also considered beneficial in improving flow of bile in the liver.
