Wild Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is also known as a powerful hepatic stimulant which increases bile secretion and promotes digestion. Wild chicory has even been referenced in ancient Greek writings and was called "Friend of the Liver" by Galenus on account of its stimulating effect on the liver. It has been used in traditional herbal preparations for removal of excess internal mucus as well as for gallstones.
A study published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology journal showed the ameliorating effects of chicory on rats. Chicory extract helped to reduce hepatoxicity and reduce the levels of bilirubin and biochemical markers aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP). It also helped reduce oxidative stress.5

Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) – protects the liver from toxicity induced by drugs. It is considered a detoxicant. It is a plant that is found and used around the world both as a herb and as a food. In traditional herbal use, the juice has been used in cases of liver and spleen enlargement as well as when the liver gets scarred by alcoholism and liver tissue damage by other causes. In a study on rats published in the Biological Trace Elements Research journal, it was found that this herb helped to protect the liver from the effects of cadmium chloride toxicity.
