8 ways to prevent ama from food with Ayurvedic recommendations:

  • 1. Simple meals - Have simple meals with a few main ingredients. Avoid rich foods and a multitude of different foods at a single meal.

  • 2. Avoid cold foods - Avoid eating foods that are cold including foods taken directly from the refrigerator and freezer. Cold water and ice cream is to be avoided.

  • 3. Avoid large meals - Keep all meals small. Eating even after being satiated is to be avoided.

  • 4. Lunch and dinner - Lunch should be the main meal. Dinners should be light.

  • 5. Mindfulness - Eat every meal with mindfulness. Observe the colors, taste and texture. Our eyes eat before our mouths and mindful observation will also help to bring satiety sooner

  • 6. Emotional well-being - Do not eat while upset. It will cause indigestion. It is important to maintain a positive attitude in life. Anger, stress and worry also cause a build-up of ama.

  • 7. Avoid mixing certain food groups - Fruits are best eaten alone and not in combination with other foods. Milk and dairy are generally difficult to digest and should be taken alon. Milk should not be consumed with fruits.

  • 8. Include certain foods - Use of herbs and spices like ginger in cooking helps in digestion. Hot herbs like garlic and pepper stimulate the digestive juices or agni (digestive fire). Having a little yogurt after a meal also aids digestive. A little ghee helps in food absorption.
