Clinical Evaluation of Pilex, a Herbal Formulation in the Management of Hemorrhoids

ABSTRACT

Fifty patients of either sex aged between 22 and 63 years entered in the study for the evaluation of safety and efficacy of Pilex. Pilex is a formulation of herbs and minerals designed for the management of hemorrhoids.

In the group that entered the study, 31 had external hemorrhoids, 10 had internal hemorrhoids and 9 of the patients had both internal as well as external hemorrhoids. The patients were given Pilex at a dose of 1 tablet, twice daily for 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks treatment, the patients were evaluated for efficacy and tolerability of Pilex tablets. The results revealed that response to Pilex was very good in 56.25 % of patients and good in 37.50% of the patients, showing a marked improvement in general health along with a gross reduction of associated symptoms. There were no side effects observed during the treatment and follow-up period.

Role of Pilex Tablets and Pilex Ointment in the Treatment of 1st and 2nd Degree Haemorrhoids

INTRODUCTION

Treatment of haemorrhoids varies according to the degree of piles. For early piles, treatment on conservative lines is indicated. The application of an astringent ointment containing glycerine, tannic acid and ointment containing cortisone as an anti-inflammatory agent with a local anaesthetic and other non-operative measures have been practised. All these measures are expensive and have rebound toxicity. On the other hand, Pilex tablets and Pilex ointment in combined therapy are reported very effective by many workers. Pilex treatment is an economical, quick and safe remedy.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This study was conducted in thirty patients who were attending as out–patients at Rohtak Nursing Home. Out of thirty cases, ten cases had first-degree piles and the remaining twenty cases had second degree piles. A detailed history was taken in each case to exclude other causes of bleeding per rectum. Digital and proctoscopic examinations were done to determine the degree, position, colour, size and sign of inflammation or thrombosis. Patients having 1st and 2nd degree haemorrhoids were considered. All the thirty cases were males aged between 31-40 years were having bleeding per rectum, pain during defaecation and constipation.

These thirty cases were put on Pilex therapy as under:

Pilex tablets - 2 t.d.s. for 1 month, 2 b.d. for 2 months
Pilex ointment - For local application
Styplon tablets - 2 t.d.s. for 3 days
Herbolax tablets - 2 tablets one hour before last meal (whenever necessary).

RESULTS

All the cases were followed up to three months. It was observed that out of 30 cases, in 23, bleeding per rectum was completely controlled and in the remaining 7 cases, it was moderately checked. In twenty four patients, pain during defaecation was completely controlled and the remaining six cases showed moderate improvement. None of the patients reported any side effects. During this short study, it was seen that Pilex therapy is most effective in first and second-degree haemorrhoids.
