The main function of the digestive tract is to break food down into smaller particles that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Nutrients are primarily absorbed in the small intestine while the large intestine or colon absorbs water from undigested waste and pushes the solid waste into the rectum for elimination. Constipation occurs when waste does not get eliminated in a timely fashion. More water gets absorbed and waste gets more compacted creating a vicious cycle.
The frequency and form of a bowel movement depends on what you eat and drink, the muscle tone of your abdomen and pelvis, your stress level, any medications and your general daily pattern. Constipation and irregularity can cause discomfort, bloating and make you feel sluggish. Straining on account of constipation can cause painful, bleeding hemorrhoids and/or diverticulosis. Straining can also raise blood pressure and heart stress.
To maintain regularity and digestive tract health the following natural remedies are useful:
- Include fiber in your diet in the form of cereals, whole grains, vegetables and fruits.
- Drink plenty of water
- Exercise daily
- Have meals at regular times. Breakfast is a stimulant to bowel activity but many people tend to skip it.
